Fear! Fear is lack of understanding, Fear is ignorance. Post 9/11 Code Orange was used to strike fear in the heart of the American people. Orange was a key element in spreading that fear far and wide. Because of this fear, Americans became handicapped when it came to making sound decisions.
Family Values is another mechanism used to control and manipulate through fear. Fear of what could happen if the GLBT community gained their civil rights. As Americans, we let fear control us and we surrendered our power to those who claimed that they are working for our benefit. To stand up to our leaders became unpatriotic, and those who did so suffered at the hands of the media.
In this series, the color Orange represents Fear, Ignorance, and Inequality. Orange is a beautiful color that is soothing and comforting; it should warm your hearts and stimulate your thoughts. Instead, it has been used to imprison us with fear.
As a community, we cannot be complacent and satisfied with what we have achieved. As we have seen in recent elections, our progress is anything but assured. We MUST continue the fight for all our civil rights. My hope is that as you view the work, it will inspire you, and cause you to reflect on the question.
“What am I doing to make a difference in our struggle for equality?”
My hope is that you walk away knowing that every life is precious and we are all equal; everyone has the right to exist and live life to the fullest.
Love is the most powerful tool that we have at our disposal, and one that cost us nothing.
